About Red2Green

Red2Green is a registered charity, No. 1112429, working to increase opportunities in leisure, education and work for people with a wide range of disabilities in Cambridgeshire. We were set up in November 1997 and were originally called Turning the Red Lights Green, although our every day working name is now Red2Green.

Red2Green works with people aged 14+ who have learning disabilities, mental health problems, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, dementia or social communication disorders. We also raise awareness of the potential of people with disabilities to make a positive and valuable contribution to society.

To achieve our aims we run a number of projects, enabling people with disabilities to learn new skills, enjoy a wide range of leisure activities, make new friendships, gain confidence and prepare themselves for employment.

600 people with disabilities attend our projects each week. We have 50 employees, 70 volunteers and a board of 10 trustees. End of section

Welcome from Andy Hamilton, Red2Green's patron

"I am so pleased to welcome you to Red2Green's website. Red2Green is a vibrant organisation with much to offer people with disabilities in Cambridgeshire and what I hope you'll feel, as you browse through these pages, is the energy that is threaded through all its projects and programmes.

"As anyone familiar with my radio and television programmes will have gathered, I am passionate about the positive portrayal of people with disabilities. So I am pleased that this website is central to Red2Green's efforts to raise awareness of the potential of people with disabilities to make a valuable contribution to society."

Red2Green's ethos

Through our individually tailored activity programmes, Red2Green strives to:

  • encourage independence and self-worth
  • provide an atmosphere where self choice is fostered
  • value peoples' differences
  • encourage those who attend our programmes to lead their own learning
  • promote development through fun.

Red2Green works to raise awareness more widely in the general public of the potential of people with disabilities to make a positive and valuable contribution to society. We believe people with disabilities should:

  • have equal opportunities to participate in work, learning and leisure activities
  • be able to access services and opportunities within the community, as part of the community
  • confidently fulfil their lives free from prejudice
  • be recognised as having the same human and civil rights as everyone else.

"From our point of view it was apparent that not only had we much to learn about people with disabilities, but also they have to work far harder to fit into our world.

"The light must change to green to see people with disabilities as enabled, not just labelled."
